David Espinoza

Senior Principal Geo-environmental Engineer
GeoSyntec Consultants

Profile

David Espinoza is a Senior Principal Engineer based in Columbia, Maryland. He has worked over the past 30 years in design and construction of containment facilities for multiple applications (e.g., municipal solid waste, mining tailings, coal-combustion residuals) as well as closure of such facilities. He is a world expert in analysis natural and manmade slopes, designing over extremely soft soils, reinforced earth soils, and the use of geosynthetic materials for a variety of geoenvironmental applications (e.g., hydraulic barriers, subsurface drainage, and reinforcement). More recently, his capabilities have expanded into decision analysis and financial evaluation areas. Dr. Espinoza has developed unique quantitative methods that allows decision makers to account for technical risk along with financial risks using state of the art financial theory. He has authored several papers on engineering and finance that have been published in peer-reviewed journals and financial newspapers such as the Financial Times.
For his solid waste clients, Dr. Espinoza has lead solid waste permit applications in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. He has performed geotechnical engineering evaluations, slope stability analysis, embankment and mechanically stabilized earth walls design, drainage systems and geotechnical monitoring plans. His project sites have included locations where weak soil conditions prevented standard design techniques. His in-depth understanding of numerical models and geomechanics allowed him to model complicated soil-structure interaction conditions that led to design recommendations successfully executed in the field.
