KEITH Introduces Long-Lasting, Versatile J-MAX™ Floor

KEITH Manufacturing Co. has worked to adapt its proven WALKING FLOOR® technology to the needs of haulers.  The latest invention for the company’s trailer unloader is the steel, “J-MAX” floor slat for highly abrasive materials. The new slat provides the versatility to haul a wide variety of materials, including municipal solid waste, salt, mulch and glass.

The new J-MAX™ steel floor system is designed for longer wear when unloading abrasive material. “A key benefit of the J-MAX™ floor is the product diversity that operators can unload,” says Mike Robinson, sales director at KEITH Manufacturing Co. “The ability to back haul can double the efficiency of your trailer, so a floor slat that handles a variety of materials is a big plus.”

Constructed of roll formed high strength steel, the J-MAX™ floor system has a longer slat life than standard aluminum flooring. The unique “J”-shaped seal reduces material from sifting through the floor, making it a good choice for hauling sand, gravel and wood waste.

Trailers equipped with KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® systems offer several advantages, including fast unloading and the ability to unload without tipping. A series of hydraulically driven floor slats horizontally “walk” material out the rear of the trailer, providing a safer unloading system than dump trailers.

In addition to the J-MAX™ floor, KEITH offers a variety of slat profiles, including aluminum IMPACT designs and the rugged V-FLOOR® system. Factors such as material abrasion, how the trailer will be loaded and if the trailer needs to support forklift traffic should be considered when choosing a flooring type. “Operators need to match the flooring with the material,” adds Robinson.

KEITH Manufacturing Co. is located in Madras, OR where it produces the WALKING FLOOR® brand of unloading systems. Systems are used in a variety of industries internationally to handle bulk and palletized materials. The company designs, machines, fabricates and assembles nearly 100 percent of the components used in its WALKING FLOOR® systems at its facility in central Oregon. KEITH has sold more than 60,000 units around the globe and holds over 270 patents.

KEITH Brings 50 Years Of Experience To Waste Industry

With five decades of innovation in the waste industry, KEITH Manufacturing continues to strive to provide customers with the most reliable material handling equipment on the market. The KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® is a self-unloading system where the moving floor is made of a series of reciprocating floor slats powered by a hydraulic drive. As the floor cycles through its phases, material is conveyed or unloaded.

A WALKING FLOOR® unloading system unloads material horizontally, with no tipping. Trailers with WALKING FLOOR® systems safety unload on uneven ground; provide a controlled material discharge; and can unload in windy conditions. Trailers can also unload adjacent to other equipment, which is not recommended for tipping trailers due to the increased risk of overturning the trailer.

In addition to safety considerations, many municipalities choose WALKING FLOOR® unloaders over tipper trailers because they do not want the added expense of owning and maintaining a tipper system. This also eliminates the need for a near vertical wall for unloading tippers, which provides landfill operators with more flexibility in unloading locations.

This can improve both safety and efficiency at the landfill. During peak operating times, trailers can be positioned closer to each other during unloading without compromising safety. This also increases the efficiency of the landfill’s other equipment, as dozers and front end loaders can work in a consolidated area to compact the waste.

KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® systems are designed for durability in the waste industry. The hydraulic system easily handles the high volume of waste and multiple loads that transfer trailers haul each day. Components are designed for accessibility during repairs. KEITH systems also feature interchangeable check valves and hydraulic cylinders for ease of maintenance. This also reduces the parts inventory fleet owners need to stock.

KEITH Manufacturing Co was launched in the early 1970s in Madras, Oregon when company founder Keith Foster set off to make an automated moving floor unloading system. While other versions of moving floor technology existed, it was Foster who focused on creating a 100% hydraulic drive unit that was powerful enough to unload a semi-trailer. In 1973, KEITH Manufacturing Co. introduced the first commercially viable moving floor unloading system under the WALKING FLOOR® brand name.

The waste industry started using WALKING FLOOR® technology in the early 1980s. In 2001, Keith Foster was recognized for his accomplishments in making the unloading of solid waste easier, safer and more efficient by being inducted into the Environmental Industry Association (EIA) Hall of Fame.

At the event it was noted that, “The WALKING FLOOR® system has frankly revolutionized the waste industry.”

WALKING FLOOR® systems are also installed in storage bins where they integrate the material receiving, storage and metering needs. KEITH bins are custom engineered to the facility’s needs and can be designed to handle nearly any weight or material conveying volume.

Boost Material Handling Efficiency Using KEITH Technology

Versatility is key in maintaining efficient and economical operations at Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF). Live-bottom bins outfitted with KEITH WALKING FLOOR® systems can receive, store and meter recyclables, streamlining material flow. This “moving floor” unloader is made of a series of floor slats, which are powered by a hydraulic drive. As the floor cycles through its phases, material is conveyed, often to takeaway conveyors and on to a baler.

Located side-by-side these bins can be installed under sorting lines to store separated recyclables until they are ready for processing. Because the speed of the WALKING FLOOR® conveyor can be regulated, the risk of overloading or damaging the takeaway conveyor is reduced.

KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® systems are designed to suit each facility’s needs. They are custom engineered to handle loads of nearly unlimited tonnage. Material can be unloaded directly into the bin, even when the floor is operating. Systems are designed to handle the demands of the waste and recycling industries and have low maintenance requirements.

For more than 50 years, KEITH Mfg. Co. has provided a variety of industries with reliable and innovative WALKING FLOOR® technology. For more information on KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® products and its international locations, visit booth #2935 or www.keithwalkingfloor.com.

KEITH Celebrates 50 Years of WALKING FLOOR® Technology

KEITH Manufacturing Co. was launched in the early 1970s when founder Keith Foster set out to make the lightest, simplest, most trouble-free self-unloading system yet devised. He succeeded and 50 years later, the KEITH® WALKING FLOOR® system is helping customers make their work more efficient and profitable.

At the event it was noted that, “The WALKING FLOOR® system has frankly revolutionized the waste industry.”

Always innovating, the company quickly expanded its product line, offering WALKING FLOOR® bins for facility applications for recycling operations, waste-to-energy plants, wood products manufacturing and the agriculture industry. Today, it offers products for everything from ice production to moving pallets.

KEITH Manufacturing Co. remains a family-owned business. WALKING FLOOR® unloading systems are used in a variety of industries internationally to handle bulk and palletized materials. The company designs, machines, fabricates and assembles nearly 100 percent of the components used in its WALKING FLOOR® systems at its facility in central Oregon.
