Let’s Talk Batteries: Current Look, Recycling & Opportunities

  • Tuesday, May 07, 2024:11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Room: W220-221

Description

Lithium-ion batteries power our daily lives in the U.S., and around the world.  They power our vehicles, grid systems, and consumer electronics.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), EV sales in the U.S. were up 60% from 2022 with over 1.6 million cars sold.

Market researchers believe that across the battery recycling value chain, from collection to metal recovery, revenues are expected to grow to more than $95 billion annually by 2040. Currently, there is less than 5% of lithium-ion batteries being recycled.

Suzie Boxman with the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) sits down with American Battery Technology Company’s COO Andres Meza to the future of battery recycling in the U.S. Topics explored during this fireside chat format include:

  • Battery metals supply chain buildout in the US, and the need to secure domestic supplies to increase national security, lessen foreign reliance, build out a new energy manufacturing sector in the U.S., mitigate environmental and social impacts
  • Battery recycling trends in the U.S.
  • Addressing the concerns of safety and recyclability
  • Establishing infrastructure and programs designed to remove lithium-ion batteries from the waste stream
  • Lithium-ion battery waste classifications, labeling and regulations
  • Transportation and reverse logistics
  • Government incentives and the IRA
  • Battery metals commodities market
  • Identifying credible battery recycling companies and deciphering reputational risks of others
  • American Battery Technology Company’s first-of-kind technologies, and expertise in in the identification, logistics, engineering, and operations of battery recycling
